TORTOISE KILLING CONTINUES
On 1st February, Park Wardens in Isabela visited Cerro Azul volcano to monitor the giant tortoises and remove the introduced plants and animals found there. Cerro Azul is home to an important population of subspecies and a potential ecotourism site. What they found were 2 female adult tortoises that had been killed on purpose. The Park Wardens calculated that the tortoises had been killed about a month ago as the carapaces still had flesh attached.
Oscar Carvajal said "The carapaces were mutilated with machete cuts."
The GCT accepts that the majority of people on Isabela are interested in ecotourism as a sustainable source of income but condemns the cruel actions of a minority.
