Conservation
The Galapagos Conservation Trust (GCT) was founded in 1995 to raise much needed funds to support the vital work of our key partners in the Islands - the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Park. We achieve our aims in many ways, including:
- Controlling the introduction of non-native animals and plants
- Controlling those invasive species that have already reached the Islands
- Promoting wise and sustainable use of the marine resources of Galapagos
- Assisting the development of information and education programmes
- Captive breeding and repatriation programmes for a number of species including giant tortoises
- Supporting socioeconomic initiatives working with local people to minimise the impact from development and human intervention
- Funding the operations of the Charles Darwin Foundation
Current Programmes
Over the past 15 years Galapagos Conservation Trust has sent over £1.7 Million in support of a wide range of conservation projects and programmes run by our local partners - mainly the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Park
Conservation methods evolve just like the wildlife in Galapagos and in recent years major projects have been approached in a more holistic way. Most of the current programmes can be classified under three main areas; climate change, island restoration and local community involvement, including education. These are three very broad topics and each area has been broken down into smaller projects that are occurring in priority order, as funding becomes available.
GCT is currently raising funds for a number of projects, some of which are listed below. If you would like to support any of these projects by making a donation, please visit online donation, or write to us at 5 Derby Street, London, W1J 7AB. For more information on a specific project, please contact us and we will be happy to provide more details.
If you would like to discuss making a significant contribution to any of the projects listed or more generally to conservation in Galapagos we would be delighted to talk this through in more detail with you. Please don't hesitate to contact Toni Darton, our chief executive on 020 7629 5049 or toni@gct.org
Thank you very much for your support.
