GALAPAGOS DAY 2005 in collaboration with Discovery Initiatives
The GCT celebrated its 10th anniversary with a very special Galapagos Day. Professor David Bellamy, President of the GCT, was the main speaker and he entertained the audience with his stories of conservation work around the world. However, Professor Bellamy also set those present a serious challenge - to continue helping protect and conserve the Galapagos.
Galapagos Day was also the first occasion in which the new Executive Director of the Charles Darwin Foundation - one of our main local partners in Galapagos - was able to speak directly to GCT supporters. Dr Graham Watkins outlined the current challenges of Galapagos and what we need to do to meet them. Graham highlighted the importance of the support from GCT donors and how your support will become increasingly more important in the next few years.
Donna Harris, a young student that GCT has financed, gave a short overview of the work she has been doing on the endemic rice rat of Galapagos. Her presentation was lively and interesting and we hope to be able to hear more about Donna's work in the future.
The evening ended with a slide show from Nigel Sitwell, GCT Chairman, and one of its founders. This Galapagos Day is Nigel's last one as Chairman - he steps down in early 2006. Earlier in the evening, the GCT Trustees and staff had made a presentation to Nigel of an exclusive Panama hat as a small gesture of their appreciation for all his hard work over the years. The GCT would like to thank Majesa Ltd for sourcing the hat.
As always, the GCT is very grateful to the fantastic volunteers who helped on the night. We would like to thank: Andy Currie, Naomi Dawson, Jackie Deighan, Susan Edwards, Penelope Kellie, Lucy Kublikowski, Ania Mudrewicz, Indu Ramaswamy, Mishal Razak, Shazia Riaz, Vicky Rowley, Carley Sitwell, Sharon Smith, Catherine Wigglesworth, Akemi Yokoyama.
The 2006 Galapagos Day will be on 27 September 2006 - also at the RGS. The BBC will be showing footage of the new series they are filming which will be broadcast in the autumn of 2006, and the filmmakers will talk about their experiences of filming in Galapagos. We hope you will be able to attend.
