GALAPAGOS DAY SHREWSBURY
In February each year we celebrate the life of Charles Darwin, as it was in this month back in 1809 that the great British scientist was born. As a tribute, GCT was pleased to once again collaborate with the Darwin Festival, which takes place annually in his home town of Shrewsbury, and host Galapagos Day Shrewsbury 2008.
The event was a great success, with guest speaker Chris McFarling addressing the St Julian's Centre, packed with 100 GCT supporters; with money raised from ticket sales going straight to the conservation of the islands. We were delighted to receive a letter from one of our life members following the event, who wrote, "We very much enjoyed the presentation and hope the people present will give support to GCT as it is such a worthwhile cause."
Chris, who lived and worked as a naturalist guide in Galapagos during the mid 1980s before moving into film research and production for the BBC Natural History Unit, gave the talk 'Galapagos Barefoot - Leaving Only Footprints'. The lecture reflected upon both his experiences as an inhabitant of the islands and on the conservation efforts that are going on today; as a Trustee of GCT for 10 years, Chris certainly knows his stuff!
The lecture was also attended by GCT staff and the event sponsor, Galapagos expert, David Horwell. We would like to take this opportunity to thank David of tour operators Select Latin America for his generous contribution, and for his participation in the event, where both David and GCT's Abigail joined Chris in answering questions after the talk.
We also extend a big thank you to everybody who made the event possible, and to all of our supporters who attended the event. Please look out for details of Galapagos Day Shrewsbury 2009, which promises to be a fantastic occasion as we will be celebrating Mr Darwin's 200th Birthday!
