Lonesome's Auction - now closed
Winning Bid: £900.00 Name: Matthew Simkins
Lonesome George is the most famous creature in Galapagos. He is an icon, a national treasure and most importantly and sadly he is a Galapagos Giant Tortoise who is the last of his kind. For George's race it may be too late; but whilst the search for a happier ending continues we must learn from the story of the rarest animal in the world as a symbol of what can happen without respecting our environment and the wildlife that we share it with.
All of the staff at GCT are extremely fond of Lonesome George and were thrilled when we received the design of their 2010 Christmas card earlier this year.
Alexis Deacon is a well known illustrator who visited Galapagos as part of our Gulbenkian Galapagos Artist Residency Programme.
On his return from the Islands we asked if he would consider designing our Christmas card and he was delighted to be given the opportunity to give something extra back to Galapagos.
This is how the 'Lonesome's Christmas' card came about and in addition to Alexis' already generous contribution, he has also now donated the original design.
Lonesome's Christmas is a delightful watercolour painting and will make the perfect gift to anyone with a connection to Galapagos, a love of art, a love of Christmas, a love for tortoises or indeed Lonesome George himself. The auction of this one off piece will end at Midday on 1 December and we will update this page with the latest offers as they come in. To place a bid, please complete the form via our secure website here.
Don't forget to revisit this page to make sure that you are not out bid! After completing the payment form once, you can simply email (gct@gct.org) us with your new offer.
