GNP PURSUES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST VISITING SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH GROUP
Following a formal complaint filed by the Guides Association of Galapagos with the Galapagos National Park (GNP) on 29 June regarding violations committed at a field research camp on Espanola Island (see CDF supports investigation into possible violations by visiting research group), the GNP presented evidence before the Public Prosecutor which identified the individuals, accomplices and accessories after the fact and requested that they be sanctioned in accordance with the Penal Code and Statutory Law of Galapagos.
The GNP has identified six foreigners and one Ecuadorian, and evidence included photographs of the group catching and eating crabs, as well as fishing.
As a precaution, the GNP have suspended permissions to the increasing number of research groups requesting to be allowed to camp on Espanola.
The legal actions taken by the GNP were presented to the Junta de Manejo Participativo - the body made up of all the local stakeholders, which manages the Galapagos Marine Reserve - in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the 21st and 22nd of July.
